There are a lot of different strange customs in the world connected with the child care. One of the most unusual and dangerous for babies is El Colacho festival annually held in Spanish town Castrillo de Murcia.
First time it was celebrated in 1620 and has come to nowadays almost without changes. This ritual meant the purification of the babies’ souls. By the local beliefs it’s possible to protect the babies from the contamination and whammies. In the Chorpus of Christi Day men dressed as the Devil (known as the Colacho) jump over babies born during the previous twelve months of the year lying on the mattresses in the street. The parents are standing near the mattresses and the men in red and yellow clothes do some magic actions and conjure out of the children and then they jump and take away the troubles from the babies.
Of course the contemporary mothers consider this custom to be strange and risky for the children. But the mothers of the Spanish babies think they act correctly.
