Russian painter of the German origin Vladimir Gau was born in 1816 in the artists’ family.
His first lessons Vladimir got from his father.Later he became the pupil of a famous painter Karl fon Kugelchen.
The real success came to him when in the age of 16 he drew the portraits of the Russian Great Princesses.
He graduated from the Arts academy with a silver medal and continued his studying in Germany and Italy.
In 1840 he went back to Russia and became the Court painter.
During thirty years he was working with the Great family and carrying out the orders of the Court.
He drew a lot of portraits of Tsar, his wife and taught painting his daughters.
In 1849 he got the title of Watercolors Academician.
The paintings of the artist t are being kept in famous world museums.
In 2009 some Gau’s canvas were sold ion Christies auction , among them there was one of the most famous portraits – Alexander Pushkin’s wife- Natalia Goncharova.
